The Wisconsin Watercolor Society was founded in 1952 by a group of Wisconsin artists. It was the first Wisconsin art organization to be devoted exclusively to watercolor painting. Its purpose now as then has always been to demonstrate and exhibit meaningful development in the medium of watercolor and to serve as a catalyst for those genuinely interested in watercolor.

Joyce Ottum

Joyce Ottum is a landscape artist living in Racine, Wisconsin. Primarily a watercolorist, she also works in acrylic and oil.

Artist Biography

Recognized as a landscape artist, Joyce Ottum has a varied background including commercial and fashion illustrations and portraits in oil. She has exhibited widely in the southwest and Midwest, winning numerous awards for her landscapes, which combine rich colors and simple shapes to evoke a sense of place.

Artist Statement

My paintings are considered representational, however, I take an abstract approach, seeing the landscape as shapes and colors in harmony.

Using the classic simplicity of natural forms as a basis for my work, I try to reduce the complexity and scope of nature. In doing this, I hope to find the essence of nature and to capture a quiet moment in time.
