John Grancorvitz
Artist Statement
I paint exclusively in transparent watercolor, embracing its luminosity, spontaneity, and expressive qualities. My approach is rooted in simplicity, building each painting through a three-stage process of light, medium, and dark values. I believe that in watercolor, less is more, and I strive to create work that is both visually dramatic and emotionally resonant through thoughtful restraint.
For more than 30 years, I have worked primarily in transparent watercolor, painting almost daily while continually exploring new methods and refining techniques. In recent years, I have expanded my practice into plein air painting and have participated in the Hudson Plein Air Competition for the past two years.
My work has been exhibited at the Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wisconsin, and the CAB Community Arts-Based Gallery in River Falls, Wisconsin. I have received First Honors and Honorable Mention awards through exhibitions with the Minnesota Watercolor Society.
In addition to my studio practice, I taught watercolor classes for two years at the Phipps Center for the Arts and for five years at CAB Community Arts-Based. Prior to focusing fully on painting, I worked in graphic arts for a large Minneapolis healthcare organization for 20 years.
I am a member of the American Watercolor Society, hold Signature Status with both the Northstar Watermedia Society and the Minnesota Watercolor Society, and most recently joined the Outdoor Painters of Minnesota.
